Due to the widespread development of childhood myopia in Singapore, parents opt for soft contact lenses as a Myopia Treatment Option. This solution is effective if managing myopia however it inadvertently contributes to contact lens packaging waste.⁽³⁾
As contact lenses are classified a medical device, the packaging is specifically designed to withstand harsh environments and therefore, they don't biodegrade easily⁽⁵⁾. 97% of plastic contact lenses packaging was thrown in the waste bin instead of being recycled⁽⁶⁾.
Disposable contact lenses present a potential physical threat to aquatic and terrestrial environments and may contribute to micro-plastic pollution⁽⁷⁾.
The amount of contact lens waste generated in Singapore per month is estimated to be heavier than the weight of 34 Great White Sharks!!!⁽⁸⁾
Do your part for the environment by recycling your contact lens packaging.
Contact lens packaging that is not disposed of properly may end up in the environment, break down into micro-plastics and enter our ecosystem and food supply.
Contact Lens is classified as Class II and Class III Medical Devices since 1976⁽⁹⁾. It's packaging must be sterilised for hygienic purposes.⁽¹⁰⁾. While it is forbidden to recycle contact lenses from the market for any reason, its packaging made from sanitised Aluminium and Polypropylene are excellent materials to recycle.
